Introduction to copyright.
3. Introduction to copyright.
An e-product is covered by the
copyright of the author with the
word copyright and the ? symbol,
along with the Author's name and
date of copyright. For example,
copyright ? 2006 Bradley Smith.
In some countries, for example
Australia and Canada, legal
ownership and copyright may be
inherent without the declaring
"copyright" and the "?" symbol.
However if it is intended that the
products are for international
distribution it is best practise
to include the copyright symbol,
year
and copyright owner on the
product.
When it comes to copyright on an
international scale, writers and
publishers need to be careful to
declare their intent to copyright
their products by following this
rule. This avoids confusion for
internet publishers, as there are
no real borders for content
displayed by sites around the
world. (It
will also save you a great deal in
legal battles in the future.)
When a product is copyrighted it
means that you cannot change the
content without the Authors
permission. However you may reuse
or resell the item as long as you
have the Rights to do so.
For instance, if you republish
articles from article directories
on your website, you will need to
keep
the Author Information with the
article. If you have Private Label
Articles you may freely use them
on your site without having to
reference the original author.
If you have purchased
info-products to sell online, you
will need to ensure that you sell
the products
in line with the Rights that you
have received with the product. If
the products do not carry a
"licence file", check inside the
document itself. It is commonplace
for Authors to define the rights
that came with the product.
For example, you may find ebooks
with the Rights Definition, "This
is NOT a free ebook." If you
received this ebook for free then
the website owner has violated the
Terms of Sale. You should
approach the website owner and
notify them of the situation. If
this is not resolved then approach
the owner of the document and
inform them of the situation. The
owners contact details are usually
located within the ebook.
The following sections provide an
Explanation of Rights that are
sold with products. Note that
with every sale or purchase the
owner may "change the rules" and
set limitations or other
requirements on the product. Hence
while these definitions serve as a
guide you will need to be
aware of exactly what you are
purchasing prior to purchase.
